How do I know when my gutters need to be replaced?

The signs usually show up below the gutter before they show up on it: erosion or trenching in the landscaping, water stains on the siding, peeling paint on the fascia, or dampness in the basement after storms. On the gutters themselves, look for sagging sections, seams pulling apart, rust spots, and water overflowing the front edge in a normal rain. A few of these together usually mean the system is past repair — but we'll tell you honestly if a re-pitch or a section repair solves it instead of a full replacement.

What size gutters does my house need?

A 5" gutter handles most standard roof sizes and pitches just fine. We step up to 6" when the roof is large or steep, or when valleys concentrate a lot of water into one section of gutter. It's about matching capacity to how much water your specific roof actually dumps — not putting the biggest gutter on every house.

What's the difference between seamless and sectional gutters?

Sectional gutters are assembled from pre-cut pieces, and every joint between pieces is a spot that can eventually leak. Seamless gutters are custom run on site to the exact length of each wall of your home, so the only seams are at corners and downspouts. Fewer joints, fewer leak points, cleaner look.

Do I need gutter guards?

Honestly — it depends on the trees. If you or your neighbors have mature trees dropping leaves and needles over your roof, guards save you from cleaning clogged gutters every season. If your lot is open, you probably don't need them. We'll give you a straight recommendation at the estimate instead of adding them to every quote.

Most standard homes are done in a day. Larger homes, complex rooflines, or custom-ordered colors can add time, and we'll give you a clear timeline with your estimate so there are no surprises.

Will snow and ice damage my gutters?

Accepted Answer

They're the biggest stress gutters face in eastern Idaho. Freeze-thaw cycles and ice loading at the eave will pull a poorly hung system right off the house, which is why hanger spacing and proper pitch matter as much as the gutter itself. One thing worth knowing: ice dams aren't caused by gutters — they come from heat escaping into the attic and melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. If you've got recurring ice dams, that's an insulation and ventilation conversation, and we'll tell you so rather than selling you new gutters that won't fix it. On metal roofs, we also look at snow retention so sliding snow doesn't take the gutters with it.

Where does all the water go?

Away from your foundation — that's the entire job. We place downspouts so they discharge clear of the foundation, entries, and walkways, and where it makes sense we tie them into french drains so the water leaves the property instead of pooling against the house. Gutters protect your siding and landscaping, but the foundation is what they're really there for.
